Low Speed Rejected Take-off

Conditions and Environment

Incident/Accident

  • Hydraulic fault during take-off run.
  • Take-off rejected at approximately 88 knots ground speed.
  • Aircraft stopped 780 meters down the runway.
  • A passenger at the emergency exit mistook the shine of the rotating beacon for fire, shouted “Fire!”, opened the emergency exit and evacuated via the slide.
  • Other passengers followed, the overwing slides were however affected by the thrust of the running engines
  • Once aware of the situation, the flight crew initiated an orderly evacuation and shut down the engines.

Outcome

  • Eight minor injuries
  • One serious injury due to a jump from the wing.
